Green Roof Installation Up Five Percent in 2007, but Up 30 Percent Since 2006

Chicago is again the number one city for green roofs in the U.S., with over half a million new square feet of green roofs installed in 2007.

While that might not seem an impressive gain, it is considering the 2006 survey revealed a 25 percent increase in green roof installations, for a total percentage gain of 30 percent over the past two years.

The green roof trend means better esthetics for ugly tar, asphalt or your basic concrete roof, but also cleaner air, a lessening of the heat island effect, reducing building energy consumption and less stormwater runoff.

Baltimore, Chicago, Wilmington, Washington and Philadelphia were among the U.S. cities with most green roofs installed in 2007. Chicago remains the number one city for green roofs with over one-half million new square feet of green roofs installed in 2007, evidence of the city?EUR??,,????'?????<

Steven Peck, founder and president of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, was pleased to see Baltimore on the list for the first time, as it is the host city for their annual international green roof conference (April 30 ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Other newcomers to the Top 10 U.S. cities list were Brooklyn, Virginia Beach, Royersford, Penn, Philadelphia, Amery, Wis. and Germantown, Md.

A Top 10 List of Green Roof Cities for Canada was also compiled. Toronto is number one, followed by Calgary and Quebec City. Toronto is hosting the World Green Roof Congress, October 19-21, 2009.
