Single-family authorizations in April were at a rate of 385,000; this is 1.8 percent below the revised March figure of 392,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 143,000 in April.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 551,000. This is 4 percent below the revised March rate of 574,000 and is 12.8 percent below the revised April 2010 estimate of 632,000. During that time single unit authorizations were down 18.6 percent, but 2 to 4 units increased 21.1 percent and 5 or more units increased 2.1 percent.

The Northeast was the region that fared the best with no overall change in authorizations and a decrease of 2.7 percent for single units. The South fared the worst with an overall decrease of 5.7 percent and down 4.7 percent for single units.
