Building Permits Decrease in November

 

In the past year the West was the region that fared the best with overall decreases of 1.7 percent for authorizations and 16 percent for single units. The Midwest fared the worst with an overall decrease of 23.6 percent and drop of 8.4 percent for single units.

Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in November were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 530,000. This is 4 percent below the revised October rate of 552,000 and is 14.7 percent below the November 2009 estimate of 621,000.

Single-family authorizations in November were at a rate of 416,000; this is 3 percent above the revised October figure of 404,000. From November of 2009 to November 2010, it decreased 14.9 percent, with decreases of 23.1 percent for 2 to 4 units and 11.3 percent for 5 or more units. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 94,000 in November.
