ASLA Names New Executive Vice President First Woman to Serve Washington, D.C. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recently announced the appointment of Nancy C. Somerville as the Society's new executive vice president. Effective August 21, 2000, Somerville will become the first woman to serve as the Society's executive vice president. Somerville comes to the ASLA after 18 years with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) where she served as managing director and vice president of various programs, including membership, state and local government affairs, chapter relations, and continuing education. Somerville's appointment follows a thorough selection process that involved hundreds of nominations and applications. The search committee was comprised of two trustees, a chapter president, two members-at-large, and a Landscape Architectural Foundation representative. The ASLA Executive Committee conducted the final round of interviews and made the ultimate decision. Jim Tolliver served as the management team leader during the interim and has been promoted to serve as ASLA's deputy executive vice president.
