ASLA Georgia Chapter

State Association Report
by Curt Jackson, PLA, LEED AP, Chapter President

PARK(ing) Day 2020 was a huge success as it was transformed into a 'socially distanced' outdoor co-working and play experience. The GAASLA team lead by Kristen Koehnemann, Kristin L'esperance, Lauren Linnane, and Rishika Chaudhry, partnered with the neighborhood of Reynoldstown, and the Lang-Carson Community Center to take over the entire parking lot for the day. Planned activities were scheduled throughout the day that included two outdoor yoga sessions. Thanks to a donation of artificial turf, our yoga studio was a nice soft addition to the parking lot environment.
We kicked off the summer with our annual Executive Committee elections. I'd like to congratulate and welcome our new officers and a huge thanks to our membership that participated in the vote. We tallied double the votes as our previous elections. Our newest officers include Chapter trustee Todd Hill, president elect Kristin L'esperance, communications chair, Lauren Linnane, middle Georgia section chair Wimberly Treadwell, and the reelection of incumbent treasurer Sarah Boyer. The Executive Committee is a volunteer organization and we've been incredibly impressed with what this group of landscape architectural leaders has accomplished.

The Executive Committee has been extremely busy working out how to serve and protect our profession. All Executive Committee members, along with University of Georgia's College of Environment and Design professors and GSLA students, dedicated a weekend at the College of Environmental and Design in Athens, GA to plan out 2020's objectives. Strengthening the bond between professionals and future emerging professionals is one of the Chapter's top priorities. It was terrific to have students not only attend our summit, but participate, and continue to volunteer. GAASLA members have participated in multiple portfolio reviews at the college.

To assist our profession's future Landscape Architects through the pandemic and beyond, the Georgia Chapter of ASLA and emerging professional chair Quynh Pham was incredibly excited to be accepting mentor applications for the 2020 GAASLA 'FOUNDATIONS' Mentorship Program. After a successful kick off, mentors and mentees have been connected and the program is gaining momentum.

This Spring GAASLA had the opportunity to highlight the state's future Landscape Architects with our 2020 Student Awards. We received submissions from both the Bachelor's and Master's program of the UGA College of Environment and Design. Congratulations to this year's Georgia Chapter Student Award Winners.
