To evaluate the conditions and challenges of our vital infrastructures, the American Planning Association (APA) has created the National Infrastructure Investment Task Force. Its goal is to develop a new vision for that infrastructure, and identify recommendations for changes in public policy and planning practices.

The new group is headed by David Siegel, AICP, APA past president, the current APA president, Robert Hunter, FAICP, and the APA president-elect, Bruce Knight, FAICP.

The task force steering committee will include chairpersons of six topic subcommittees: transportation, water, energy, technology and telecommunications, public facilities and green infrastructure.

Field Hearings

Six to 10 meetings will be held across the U.S. in 2009 to identify major infrastructure policy and investment issues of regional concerns. Two meetings have already been held: one in Chicago, Nov. 20, 2008, and one in the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<

Down the line, the APA will release specific policy recommendations. A Town Hall Toolkit will be developed to assist APA chapters and in conducting local infrastructure events. A Summary Booklet will also be developed, a kind of condensed report more suited for public officials and the general public. A final report from the task force is expected by fall 2009.
