At the ASLA annual meeting in Salt Lake City in 2004, several LASN editors had the opportunity to visit during lunch with Matthew Evans, the senior landscape architect for the Capitol grounds. The talk turned to the national Christmas tree and selecting it (his job), and we, southern Californians, observed that the largest Christmas tree in the U.S. in the past years has been the one at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Ca.
The Washington Times reports that House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, brace yourselves, has instructed federal officials that the Christmas tree on the West Lawn, which in recent years has been called the “Holiday Tree,” apparently a PC renaming to encompass Kwanzaa and Hanukkah, be renamed the “Capitol Christmas Tree!” as it was until the late 1990s. Evans confirmed this name change to the Times.
The ?EUR??,,????'??Holiday?EUR??,,????'?? vs. ?EUR??,,????'??Christmas?EUR??,,????'?? quandary has apparently raised ire in some communities. Fortunately, in D.C., ever fodder for ?EUR??,,????'??Mark Twain Tonight,?EUR??,,????'?? our leaders are keeping an eye on the vital matters of national concern.
