The Bloch sphere, which we don't pretend to begin to understand, represents a qubit, the "fundamental building block of quantum computers."

Arik Hesseldahl, who covers technology for AllThingsD.com, reports the latest in computer chips, out later in 2014, have a thickness of 14 nanometers, just a tiny bit thicker than the wall of a human cell. IBM believes the physical limit for silicon chips might be 7 nanometers, thickness, "roughly the diameter of a hemoglobin molecule." Beyond that, IBM says the chips would not function. IBM, however, is investing $3 billion to explore the future of chips, which might include quantum computing, a theoretical construct in which atoms and molecules would perform the processing and memory tasks of today's chips.
