LAF Launches New Research Grant

Now Accepting Pre-proposals

Upon her passing in 2015, Debra Mitchell, FASLA, left a bequest to LAF through the JJR|Roy Fundi>>?, which has long supported LAF's research initiatives.

The Landscape Architect Foundation announced it has launched the LAF Research Grant in honor of Debra Mitchell.

Mitchell had a distinguished 40-year professional career and spent the last 26 years of it at SmithGroupJJR, where she served as a senior vice president and national design leader. She had a deep commitment to research in the profession and served on the LAF board of directors for many years. The $25,000 grant will fund research projects relevant to the professional practice of landscape architecture.

According to LAF, applicants from academic institutions, professional practice, and other organizations are welcome to submit. The principal investigator must be trained as a landscape architect and currently engaged in the field.

Proposed research projects must be completed in a 12- to 18-month period and should be related to landscape architecture in one or more of the following areas: sustainability, climate change mitigation or adaptation, resilience, social equity, health and well-being, urbanization, biodiversity, landscape performance, the economic case for sustainable landscapes, design advocacy, design as research, and design innovation.

The research grant timetable is as follows:

• Oct. 2019: Application materials available
• Dec. 1, 2019: Pre-proposal due
