ASLA Chapters Celebrate PARK(ing) Day

Marks ASLA's 14th Celebration

PARK(ing) Day's inaugural celebration was in 2005. Here is this year's offering from Arizona State University students in downtown Phoenix.

On September 20, 2019, the national headquarters of The American Society of Landscape Architects celebrated PARK(ing) Day with a climate-themed parklet.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual event that encourages community members, students, and designers to transform metered parking spaces into temporary parklets.

"National ASLA and many of our chapters nationwide are using PARK(ing) Day to demonstrate how streetscapes can be better designed to play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions," said Wendy Miller, FASLA, president-elect of ASLA. "Reducing parking spaces means more space for low-carbon forms of transportation like walking and bicycling. It is ideal that this year's PARK(ing) Day coincides with the Youth Climate Strike that draws attention to the perils of the climate crisis."A

The climate-themed parklet, designed in partnership with landscape architecture firm, Lee & Associates, encourages passersby to sit and take part in interactive activities aimed at informing the public about the effects of climate change.A

ASLA is also offering tours of its Smart Policies for a Changing Climate Exhibition, currently running in the Center for Landscape Architecture, which details the many ways landscape architects design for resilience, adaptation, and mitigation.
